Blue Jays (the bird, not the team) have a bad reputation…
They are noisy and yes, they scare the little birds from your feeder, but they are an intelligent, mostly vegetarian bird. (they do eat bugs which is a plus in my book) Apparently they have been known to eat the eggs of other birds, although, according to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology :
“an extensive study of Blue Jay feeding habits, only 1% of jays had evidence of eggs or birds in their stomachs. Most of their diet was composed of insects and nuts. this is rather rare, they prefer nuts and seed along with insects and bugs.”
They are a beautiful bird and very social, forming flocks.
I was photographing this cute fellow yesterday, when along came “Mom”? (this bird seemed rather large to be fed.. but the photo speaks for itself… )
A perfect Mother tending her very large young for a Mothers Day post.
