A Blue Jay Mother

Blue Jays (the bird, not the team) have a bad reputation…

Gathering at the feeder… we counted twelve at the feeder and hanging out nearby.

They are noisy and yes, they scare the little birds from your feeder, but they are an intelligent, mostly vegetarian bird. (they do eat bugs which is a plus in my book)  Apparently they have been known to eat the eggs of other birds, although, according to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology :

“an extensive study of Blue Jay feeding habits, only 1% of jays had evidence of eggs or birds in their stomachs. Most of their diet was composed of insects and nuts. this is rather rare, they prefer nuts and seed along with insects and bugs.”051311

They are a beautiful bird and very social, forming flocks.

I was photographing this cute fellow yesterday, when along came “Mom”? (this bird seemed rather large to be fed.. but the photo speaks for itself… )

WHILE I WAS TAKING A PHOTO, ANOTHER BIRD APPEARED

IT APPROACHED

AND FED THE FIRST BIRD A NUT IT BROUGHT FROM THE FEEDER…

A perfect Mother tending her very large young for a Mothers Day post.

  1. Nice post – love your photos. We have an overabundance of blue jays that nest in and around our yard. I watched a jay giving a juvenile cardinal a hard time yesterday. The jay was chasing this little cardinal all around the apple trees limbs and across the yard. Blue jays do seem to be mischievous birds. Ha
