Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is a Puerto Vallarta city icon, it dominates Vallarta’s downtown skyline and is one of the favorite symbols and landmarks of the city. It is located just a block from the Malecon in El Centro district.
Construction of the church began in 1918 but was not completed until 1951. The top of the steeple is a beautiful crown. The original was made of concrete and was damaged in an earthquake in 1995. According to many online sources, the crown is a replica of the crown worn by Carlota, empress of Mexico in the 1860s. This however is not true and you can read more here
The crown is lifted up by eight angels. It is a beautiful sight and a must see in Puerto Vallarta.
There always is activity around the church and in the square in front of the church. The bells are often heard ringing, a beautiful sound.
I took these pictures on a recent visit. Notice the drone flying around the crown in one of the photos below.
The interior of the church is beautiful, decorated with gold and the stained glass windows are wonderful to see.
